Metabolomics is a comprehensive study of organisms at the level of the metabolite. The emergence of metabolomics as one of the ‘omics’ in systems biology perspectives has become relevant in the context of the disease-related study. The use of the metabolomics pipeline to unravel the potential of bioactive compounds in medicinal plants for benefiting mankind has become more popular in recent studies.

Most of the studies covered anticancer activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-diabetic, and atherosclerosis.  Rapid development in botanical drugs, including traditional herbal medicines, and analysis of their bioactive components is becoming more popular. One of the goals of metabolite profiling is to detect all metabolites in a biological sample with high accuracy in terms of quality and quantity.

Thus, metabolomics approaches here have the benefit of building on present knowledge and research. Nonetheless, non-targeted metabolomics does provide a distinctively different philosophy as opposed to analyses of known metabolites. In order to achieve this goal, a variety of techniques, including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance are applied to carry out metabolite detection to the maximum extent possible. This Review focused on some of the latest discoveries in unraveling the potential of medicinal plants in producing bioactive compounds to combat neurodegenerative related diseases, especially Alzheimer’s Disease.
