2. GUIDELINES FOR GROUP ASSIGNMENT (ACADEMIC ESSAY)
A. Students are required to prepare an academic essay consists of Part A and Part B with total pages of no less than 5 pages and no more than 20 pages. The total pages do not include the front page, table of content, references, appendices, and the assessment marking form.
B. The essay should be a genuine product of the students and not a copy of, or a plagiarised version of other people/author(s).
C. The groupessay MUST be organized based on the following order *:
- Front Cover** (sample can be downloaded on WBLE)
- Table of Content (listing ALL items with page number)
- Part A
- Part B
- References (refer to Section E.)
- Appendices (include ALL materials used and arrange them in sequence)
- Assessment Form (sample can be downloaded on WBLE)

The content of the essay:
For each of the issues discussed, students MUST provide the definition of any sociological concepts, theories, and sociological perspectives used in the discussion. IMPORTANT: The sources of all information, concepts, statistics, laws, and/or case studies MUST be clearly cited and stated/listed in the reference list (Refer to Section G). Each information, concepts, sociological perspectives, etc. which are related to the questions should be discussed with sufficient and valid elaborations and relevant examples. The suggestion or the recommendation must include any latest updates or changes to the current situation or condition (e.g., current policies or laws). *Discuss with the tutor for any enquiries/details related to the content of the essay |
F. Students MUST NOT present the work of another as if it were their own work. Whether paraphrasing, quoting an author directly, or describing an idea that influenced your work, you MUST credit/cite the source.

- To prevent issue related to non-participative members and to improve efficiency of the group assignment, each group MUST meet and discuss the progression of the group assignment with the tutor.
- The meeting can be done before/during/after the tutorial class or any time and/or place arrangements that was made with the tutor.
- All group members must be present in the group progression meeting with the tutor.
Each group must meet the respective tutor according to the timeline below:
Week 3 – Week 4 (first meeting)
- Provide update on the division of labour and the coordination of group efforts.
- Briefly discuss with the tutor the sufficiency and relevance of information.
- Briefly discuss the structure and the coherence of ideas and arguments throughout the whole essay with the tutor.
Week 7 – Week 8 (second meeting)
- Provide update to the tutor on the overall group direction in answering the assignment question and the members contribution.
- Briefly review the sufficiency and relevance of elaborations, supporting facts, and examples with the tutor.
- Review the acknowledgement of sources used in the group essay through in-text citations and reference lists the tutor.
Week 7 – Week 8 (second meeting)
- Provide update to the tutor on the overall group direction in answering the assignment question and the members contribution.
- Briefly review the sufficiency and relevance of elaborations, supporting facts, and examples with the tutor.
- Review the acknowledgement of sources used in the group essay through in-text citations and reference lists the tutor.
Week 8 – Week 9 (no meeting required)
- Prepare the presentation material and be ready for presentation.
REMINDER: Refer and read the group presentation guideline.
Week 10 – Week 11 (submission only, no meeting required)
- Compile, edit, and proofread all parts of group essay submitted by ALL group members; more group meetings may need to be held to review on the quality of the group essay.
- Print out the assignment after confirming that it has fulfil ALL requirements pertaining to the format.
- Submit the group essay assignment to the tutor/lecturer

3. SUBMISSION OF THE GROUP ASSIGNMENT
A. The essay assignment is to be submitted only in a printed hardcopy to the tutor.
B. The date and time of the submission will be informed by the tutor. The students are encouraged to submit earlier and to avoid last minute submission.
C. The essay can be passed to the lecturer/tutor during the classes or hands in at the lecturer/tutor’s office/room.
REMINDER: Students MUST arrange the meeting with the lecturer/tutor in advance if they wish hands in the essay assignment at the lecturer/tutor’s office/room to ensure the submission is directly received by the lecturer/tutor.
